So, there are very few perks to a global pandemic; but when you think of it: watching movies has to be one of them. If you are a cinephile, then this blog post was made specially for you, if you are not a cinephile; then perhaps it could just be a bit of fun. Anywho, let’s get to it, Top Ten Weirdest Movies To Watch This Year. Buckle up, things are about to get weird, oh Christ that’s a horrible phrase to use, but you get the point.
TOP TEN WEIRDEST MOVIES TO WATCH THIS YEAR:
10) Twelve Monkeys (1999)
12 Monkeys is a 1999 film about James Cole, a convict, decides to volunteer for a mission, wherein he has to travel back in time to learn about the main reason behind the outbreak of a virulent holocaust. Now, this movie like every other one in this list is very, very weird. It has an IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes score of; 8/10 and 89% respectively. A very good movie, and one to watch.
9) Midsommar (2019)
Midsommer; another incredibly weird film, released in 2019, but filmed in 2018 on location in Budapest in the summer and autumn of 2018. As described on Wikipedia: Dani’s psychological trauma affects her relationship with Christian, her lover. However, when they visit their friend’s ancestral commune in an effort to mend things, it changes their lives forever. This film boasts an IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes score of; 7.1/10 and 83% respectively.
8) The Witch (2015)
The Witch is a 2015 horror film set in the New England of the 17th century, a banished Puritan family sets up a farm by the edge of a huge, remote forest, where no other family lives. But sinister forces then start plaguing them. This movie is extremely gripping, with a very dark theme, you’re sure to be on the edge of your seat for most of the duration of the film. It has an IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic score of; 6.9/10, 90% and 83% respectively.
7) The Lobster (2015)
Talk about a plain weird film. The Lobster is a dark comedy film set in a dystopian society, single people must find a mate within 45 days or be transformed into an animal of their choice. It’s a movie that leaves you with an ending to remember. The Lobster ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb and Metacritic goes thus; 87%, 7.2/10 and 82% respectively.
6) The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (2017)
Casting the same main character from The Lobster(Colin Farrell). It follows the life of a surgeon and his family after they are cursed and have to make a choice. An exceptionally weird film(there’s a reason it’s in the top six). Definitely one to watch, with IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores of; 7/10, 80% and 73%. I feel these ratings don’t actually do much justice to this incredible movie though.
5) Parasite (2019)
This incredible Comedic Thriller has so deservedly won tons of awards, and is definitely one of the best movies released in 2019. Just as weird as any other film on this list. It kicks off when the struggling Kim family sees an opportunity when the son starts working for the wealthy Park family. Soon, all of them find a way to work within the same household and start living a parasitic life. The ratings on this one definitely does justice to the amazing film with IMDb, Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes ratings of; 8.6/10, 96% and 98% respectively.
4) Sorry To Bother You (2018)
When you talk about weird films and don’t mention this one, then there’s something wrong somewhere. The movie is about a telemarketer Cassius Green, who discovers an alluring method towards success. However, owing to his greed, he ends up fading away from his family and friends. Weird film and an even weirder end, definitely one to watch. Ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb and Empire goes thus; 93%, 6.9/10 and 4/5 respectively.
3) I’m Thinking Of Ending Things (2020)
Talk about a movie with the weirdest conversations, a film that submerges you in what would be normally considered ‘boring talk’ but manages to keep you locked in. Screenplay and Directing all by Charlie Kaufman; I’m Thinking Of Ending Things follows a young woman who travels with her boyfriend to his parent’s secluded farm as creepy stuff occurs on a regular basis. 6.6 IMDb, 81% Rotten Tomatoes and 78% Metacritic. On a personal note, I think this movie is very underrated.
2) Under The Skin (2013)
Definitely weirder than any movie mentioned prior to it; this film could possibly the weirdest you’ll ever see. Starring Scarlett Johansson who plays an otherworldly woman who preys on men in Scotland. How this film is as long as it is, still baffles me. It has a very dark theme and ratings that goes thus; 6.3/10, 85% and 80% on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic respectively.
1) The Lighthouse (2019)
The Lighthouse, undisputedly topping this list, is an extraordinarily mind-boggling film, that leaves its audience with a dropped jaw. Directed and produced by Robert Eggers; It stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two lighthouse keepers who begin to descend into madness when a storm strands them on the remote island where they are stationed. You will question what is and isn’t real as you go deeper into this film. This dark psychological thriller has ratings on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic that goes thus; 7.5/10, 90% and 83% respectively.
